This is an easy method one can do easily at home. Place the egg in a bowl of water. If the egg lays on its side at the bottom, it is still quite fresh. If the egg floats to the top, it's past its prime, and not good for eating. Egg shells are porous, allowing air to slowly get in over time. As more air enters the egg, it gets lighter and lighter, which explains why it will eventually float.
